The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults, by James C. McKinney
This was the main text used in my University’s pedagogy class, and I still find myself referring to it to time and time again for exercises and technique.

The Private Voice Studio Handbook, by Joan Frey Boytim
Boytim’s super practical guide covers everything a singer-aspiring-to-voice teacher needs to know. Highly recommended!

Vocal Wisdom: Maxims of Giovanni Battista Lamperti, transcribed by William Earl Brown
One of the few truly poetic guides to singing that is still practical. Highly quote-able too.

Solutions for Singers, by Richard Miller
The most reader-friendly of Richard Miller’s books, offering irresistible practical information in a Q&A format.

Music, the Brain and Ecstasy, by Robert Jourdain
This was the book that revolutionized the way I thought about music and made me want to be an ethnomusicologist.

The Rough Guide to Opera, by Matthew Boyden
This is the book that helps me pretend I know what I’m talking about when it comes to opera.

Song: A Guide to Art Song Style and Literature by Carol Kimball
A well written and comprehensive guide to classical art song, great for finding new repertoire.

Chanting the Psalms, by Cynthia Bourgeault
An informative manual for picking up Christian chant as a spiritual practice, covers ancient and modern forms of chant.

Dance Imagery for Technique and Performance, by Eric Franklin
Handbook of creative exercises that can be used for dancing and-with an extra stretch of imagination-singing.

Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, by Edith Hamilton
Not only a great read, but will give you an edge in understanding mythological references in songs and operas (especially Baroque!).

The Petrucci library, – if you’ve never heard of this site before, then you’re in for a happy surprise: the most complete database of download-able sheet music in the public domain.

The Aria Database – Searchable database of over a thousand operatic arias, including texts, translations, synopses and range

The Lied, Art Song and Choral Texts Archive – Giant archive of poetry and text used in classical art songs and choral pieces, translated into multiple languages

National Association of Teachers of Singing, has popular (print-only) journal

Classical Singer – magazine, a gathering spot for the classical singer community, offers online subscriptions

The Contemplator – Folk songs in English with lyrics, MIDI, tune information and history. Perfect for that Saturday afternoon when you feel like learning a new song.

Musica Sacra – The Church Music Association of America, full of articles on sacred music and printable books of chant

Dove Song – A written and audio archive of sacred and world music from the fifteenth century onward

Pandora Radio – personalized online radio that suggests new artists according to your listening history (sadly not available in Thailand!)

NPR – jazz, classical and world music article and sound resources
